Netflix’s best feature yet: The offline mode to download movies and TV shows to watch later.

Netflix fans in India can rejoice. The service finally gets an offline option where users can download and keep select television shows and movies. Given how terrible Internet connectivity is in India, for Netflix users, the offline features comes as a boon. Netflix is rolling this out to all the latest versions of its Android and iOS app on phones and tablets. The best bit: It applies to all plans, so don’t worry if you have the cheapest Netflix plan.

  1. I’d be happy to download a Netflix app on my Mac if it meant I could save movies and TV shows for offline viewing later. In the meantime, you can watch Netflix online in a browser window (Chrome, Safari, etc.) while we all wait for a Netflix app for Mac. Top Image Credit: Denys Prykhodov / Shutterstock.com.
  2. Part 1: How to Watch Netflix on Macbook Air/Pro via Web Browsers Netflix has introduced the ability to download certain movies and TV shows to its app for iPhone and iPad. This is great for when you're on the go and don't want to worry about streaming over a cellular network or buying in-flight internet access.

According to an official announcement, the feature is rolling out worldwide, and Netflix won’t be charging you extra for the download. The company has finally heard the cries of its users who can now binge-watch their favourite shows while travelling. Netflix is including Stranger Things, Orange is the New Black, The Crown, and several of its other original shows as part of its download option. Movies will also be included the download option.

Once you download the show or movie, you’ll be able to watch it without an Internet connection from the Netflix app on your iOS or Android device. This is compatible with devices running iOS 8.0 or later and Android 4.4.2 or later.

In order to know if the title is available to download, just search for it on the app, and look for the download icon. This is similar to how the icon looks on YouTube’s offline feature. Netflix also has a full list of downloadable shows on its website.

Once you find the show you can download, just click the download icon. For TV shows it will appear next to each available episode. Nextflix says once it has completed downloading, you can access it from the My Downloads section of the app.

Users will have the option of selecting video quality for the download as well. According to Netflix, “Standard quality is a slightly lower video resolution that requires less storage space and takes less time to download. Higher quality is a higher video resolution that requires more storage space and takes more time to download.”

The best way to watch Netflix is using its official apps, regardless of the operating system, unless you’re a Mac owner in which case you’re stuck with a browser or experimenting with third-party apps. But if you were hoping for Netflix to just port its iPad app to Mac now that macOS Catalina is available and Apple’s Catalyst tech is available to developers, you’ll have to think again. For the moment, that’s not happening, although it might have to do more with Apple than Netflix.

An extensive Bloomberg report earlier this week explained the various issues iOS developers have with porting their iPad apps to the Mac via Catalyst.

Apple’s dream is to have developers code an app once and then launch it on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. In practice, however, that’s not so easy, which explains why you’re not witnessing a flurry of updates from iOS apps telling you those apps are available on Mac as well. Some developers have had to postpone their macOS launches to further iron out wrinkles. Others had to inform buyers that a macOS version would require a separate purchase, even if they’ve already bought the app from the App Store on an iPad or iPhone. Then there are user interface issues that might need fixing, given that several iPad apps that were imagined for a touch-only experience need to be adapted for a mouse and keyboard.

These issues will be ironed out as Catalyst matures, and the work of developers will surely be cut in half in the future. Apple obviously wants to bring more apps to the Mac, especially the ones that are popular on iPhone and iPad. Once that happens, Netflix might move its iPad app to macOS as well. In the meantime, the streaming giant has confirmed to Bloomberg it has no plans to bring its popular iPad app to the Mac. Netflix has standalone apps for iOS (iPhone and iPad), Android, and Windows 10.

If you do want to watch Netflix inside an app on your Mac, you’ll have to resort to a third-party solution, and it so happens that we’ve discovered a great option. It’s called Clicker for Mac and it’ll completely change the way you watch Netflix, packing a bunch of features that are not even available in the official Netflix app, like the ability to resume playback as soon as you open the app and to automatically skip intros or jump to the next episode.
